Do you want to upgrade your sewing with a simple yet super-effective technique? Get ready to try sewing an elastic waistband! This sewing tutorial is simple to follow and results in a gorgeous pair of pants that are comfortable and style. Elastic waistbands are magical, they’re flexible which means they can stretch to your body and this means you don’t need to fiddle with tricky zips!

In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the steps to effortlessly sew an elastic waist that’s not only functional but also stylish. You’ll need a 1.5” wide elastic for this method and The Freya Trouser pattern which comes with all the measurements you’ll need! You don’t need an overlocker for this elastic tutorial but I like to use one!

The Pattern:

The Freya Flare Trousers is an easy pant sewing pattern that is comfortable and quick to sew. They’re high-waisted with a simple elasticated finish and a stylish flared leg. The effortlessly sophisticated cut hugs your body and allows for easy movement with a wider hem.

Sewing Steps:

Follow the Freya Trouser Pattern steps completely as the instructions say up until the elastic steps.

Step One:

Cut out your elastic and overlap the two ends by 1/2” or 1.3cm to join and make a circle. Clip this in place to secure the elastic in place.

Step Two:

Sew a zig-zag stitch to secure the edges together. Sew over multiple times to make a strong seam.

Step Three:

Fold the elastic at the quarter points and mark these four corners with a pen. This will make it super easy to align to the trouser waist.

Step Four:

Place the wrong side of the trouser facing out in front of you with the back side facing you. Align the zig-zag seam we sewed with the top of the waist at the centre back. Then use the other quarter points to align the side seams and centre front. Clip all four corners in place.

Step Five:

Slightly stretch the elastic as you sew the elastic edge to the trouser waist using a overlocker or a zig-zag stitch close to the edge.

Step Six:

Fold the top edge of the waist over on its self so the elastic is facing the inside of the trouser. This means the elastic is not visible anymore and is hidden underneath the waistband.

Step Seven:

To secure the elastic waistband down we’re going to stitch in the ditch. This will prevent the elastic from rolling over. We’re going to stitch in the ditch at all four quarters (front, back, and both side seams). The easiest way to do this is pin the waist in place and have the right side of the trouser facing out. Then stitch in the existing seam line to create an invisible stitch, make sure you are sewing with the right side of the fabric up to help accurately sew in the existing seam line.

And that’s how easy it is to sew an elastic waistband! This normally takes me less than 30 minutes from start to finish and I know you’ll love this method as much as I do. The Freya Trousers Pattern is perfect for anyone looking to sew comfy and easy bottoms and is perfect paired with The Naya T-shirt.
