I’m such a lover of gathered dresses and find them beyond comfortable to wear. I wanted to share how you can hack the Naya T-shirt Pattern to create a gathered smock dress. It’s a very easy top sewing pattern and with this hack you can sew this dress in and 1 1/2 hours!

The Pattern:

The Naya T-shirt is a stylish pattern that features dropped, built in sleeves that finish with a cuff detail. The slip-on and boxy fit makes the perfect cosy t-shirt. The pattern modifications to turn this t-shirt pattern into a dress is super easy to do, even if you’re a beginner!

Pattern Hack:

The Naya T-shirt only has one pattern piece for both the front and back top, so I removed 5” from the hem of the bodice. You’ll use the exact same neckband and sleeve cuffs as the pattern.

To create the skirt, you’ll want to measure the circumference of the new hem of the bodice and times that number by 1.5-2. If you want more of a gathered look go for a higher number such as 1.8 or 2. This will be the total width of the skirt we want to cut out of fabric, but because our fabric might not be as wide you’ll have to cut either cut 2 or cut 4 depending what your size and fabric width is. For the length of the skirt, this is entirely up to you – I cut mine to be 17”.

Sewing Steps:

Follow the Naya T-shirt Pattern steps completely as the instructions say up until you hem the t-shirt. Then follow the steps below to sew and attach the gathered skirt.

Step One:

Join the side seams of the skirt using a 1cm or 3/8” seam allowance. If you had to cut out 4 skirt pieces, first join 2 to create the front and the other 2 to create the back, then sew these together to create side seams.

Step Two:

Sew a line of gathering stitches all along the top edge of the front and back skirt. You’ll want to choose a longer stitch length on your sewing machine and leave long thread tails at the start and end of the seam so we can pull these in the next step.

Step Three:

Pull the bobbin thread and use your fingers to help push the gathers towards the middle of the skirt evenly. Gather the fabric by hand to make it the same circumference as the top hem.

Step Four:

Align the top and skirt waist edges together with right sides together and sew using a 1/2” or 1.3cm seam allowance.

Step Five:

Step 5: Hem the skirt by folding the bottom edges towards the wrong side by 1cm or 3/8” twice and sew close to the edge for a neat finish.
